A mellow day walking up to Barèges, through cute little villages, on a really good track, on an overcast mild day for once.

Just walked out of the hotel, turned left, over the Pont Napoleon (the third). Along his promenande down to the St-Saveur train station, up to a chateau, then up past a series of little villages in this valley.

It started raining just after our noon lunch break, so we put on the rain jackets for all of 30 minutes--first time this trip.

Past the villages, up to a high point with a cross, then along a mostly level track into Barèges, yet another spa-like town, and pleasant. Good hotel at the end of the day, great meal, though it sounds pretty basic: mushrooms in walnut sauce, roast chicken and french fries, hazelnut mousse.

Tomorrow: up to some 2400m col, through some lakes, and here in Barèges a low of 11 and a high of 16C. Might even need to wear my long-sleeved wool shirt to start out, another first on this hot dry summer in France.
