Day 18: Hamden, CT to Newbury, MA
Thu 27 Jun 2024
Miles ridden today: 206

Damien pointed out that there aren't a lot of good ways to get to the northeast corner of Mass for my layover day at Ken and Jon's, but I might enjoy traveling through the quiet northeast corner of Connecticut.

I left Hamden after breakfast and lazily headed east, down pleasant shady three digit routes until it felt like I was both in Connecticut and nowheresville, rolling hills and an occasional farm and vehicles changed to mainly Toyotas and Nissans and Hyundais as opposed to the Mercedeses and Lexusii and Audis of western Connecticut.

Took a small little ferry across the Connecticut River for fun, then started looking for gas and found a closed Citgo station so with 22 miles of range left II thought there couldn't be a gas station that far away in Connecticut. Well I did find a Mobil--but it was closed for a fuel delivery--and then lazily panicked when the attendant said "there aren't any other gas stations, the next one is 35 miles down towards Providence". He let that sink in... I was thinking "Oh, at least I can collect another state on this trip if I make it"... and then winked and said "Oh, there's a Gulf just around that corner". Thanks buddy 🙂 ... I went 265 miles on that tank and that's just a bit too close for comfort.

I decided not to go to the Vanilla Bean Cafe and just scoot up 395 to 290 to 495 to 4 to something? and let the GPS guide me to Ed's, where Richard made a simple tasty sandwich and we enjoyed cigars on the deck.

Then it over to Ken and Jons and dinner... baked scallops at The Deck in Newburyport.

Tomorrow is a zero day. Yay for zero relaxed days. Looks like rain might be happening next week, so I'm thinking my big to-do for the day will be to try on my rainsuit and see if it still fits.
