Of things. Haven't been able to update my 'real' journal with pictures and stuff since we haven't been near a phone line in a week to dial in.
- Had one of those 'oh, what are they doing talking in an Aussie accent' moments when I overheard a couple of blokes talking next to me. This was when we were shopping at Coles supermarket at Casaurina Square mall today... browsing through the Old El Paso Mexican food section. Then it was a 'duh, you're in Australia'. You tend to get those moments, particularly at shopping malls and supermarkets.
- The Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery has two Aboriginal paintings that really amused me. One was entitled 'ET Returning Home', a dot painting of (yes) ET in his spaceship going home, but with quite a bit of Resurrection themes. The other was 'Captain Cook's Arrival (On the Titanic)'. Guess a ship is just a ship.
- I really like the art from Maningrida, in Arnhem land. Most all the artists I like from there; they specialize in rrark (cross hatched) bark paintings. I also like the Groote Eylandt art; it's less stylized and more representational.
- Saw the Darwin Beer Can Regatta yesterday. These are boats made out of beer cans that do silly races and such on the beach. Fun!
- If you want to see really good Aboriginal rock art, you'll really going to have to pay a lot of money. Suffice it to say that Chris and I stayed at the most expensive place we've ever stayed at to see it. We should've checked the rates first! It wasn't good value for money, but it was one of those 'well, we have to do this' things.
Tomorrow we scoot out of Darwin for Western Australia--in particular, the Bungle Bungles and the Kimberley.
Western Australia!
